The amphora is an ancient vessel with two handles which emerged during the Neolithic period; they were produced profusely in the Classical period. Amphorae were used to transport and store luxuries such as oil and wine: in clay amphorae vessels wine could be sealed tight and turned into a great vintage – something we couldn’t do again ‘til glass bottles were invented in the early modern period.
